about

There is nothing simple or easy about playing music. Ultimately, we do this because it is in our DNA to do this, and we would not be who we are if we weren't playing. But everything you do, even the simplest gig to play, is in some way hard and complicated. It may be because you have to justify the lack of pay. It may be because it's difficult to find the time. It may be because it's like pulling teeth to promote yourself. In the end you do it because you know, after many bad turnouts, after playing for tips, you will have that one show that feeds your ego. It's so easy to justify not doing it, yet so hard not to. Luckily, I've had two people who have been through this with me, so I'm not alone. They are my yen and yang, my Heaven and Hell, my "Zen and Alchemy." Tyson Allison, (the Zen part) writes meditatively. His songs are like Haikus that grab one small part of humanity or one moment in time and pull the pure essence of that moment out for us to see. His greatest work is "The Water is Warm," which is the greatest song ever written and I will defend that song with my life. Jeff Crandall's songs are pure alchemy. His work is experimental; no element is left unused, no weapon in his arsenal is left unemployed. His greatest work is "Bottom Feeder". The powerful imagery in this song and theme of vanishing mystery and darkness in the modern world resonate strongly with me. Despite the many difficulties I have had playing music, I feel fortunate to have worked with these two amazing people. This song is for them.
