about

One of the best pieces of grant-getting advice I ever got was this: send the best recording of your best work, and nothing else. This song is one I use when applying for grants. The songs on this album, "Dissonant Creatures," are my best recordings and I'd like the rest of my albums to be this good. I also have two very talented musicians to thank who produced and performed on the songs on this album: Jeff Crandall and Tyson Allison. I've never been fond of grant writing, but have ended up with a few grants, fellowships, residencies, and contest winnings over the past two decades of my life, so I feel fortunate. I'm always happy when a composer or musician is able to nail down some money, or a notable award that will help them out. Unfortunately, musicians are now the vagabonds of society and we sometimes have to live off handouts like grants. I hope someday we don't.
