A heart to heart chat with a friend of mine was the impetus for this song--you know how those go--where they drop a bomb of wisdom on you that seems wrong at first but the more you think of it you know (in your heart of hearts) that they were right. I was thinking of the concept of things inside of things, or getting to the core of something. For some reason, this old Juliana Hatfield tune popped into my head and there's something about the way she sings this one line, "sweet on the outside, but bitter on the inside" and I knew I wanted to lift that in some form for this song. Somehow it all made sense to me, and it came together.
