about

Over the years, I've written a lot of song titles and it's interesting how these titles come about and change. They are particularly important to instrumental music because the title is often the only concrete connection the listener has to the piece. I usually let the title happen right after I'm done writing a piece, and it often has something to do with an idea I had while writing or something going on in my life. For example, one time I wrote a piece before a family vacation, so I called it "90 West" for the interstate we were about to drive on. But sometimes, titles change. I had a song called "Dissonant Creatures," but it reminded my collaborator Tyson Allison of a book he had read so much that we changed the title to "House of Leaves" and added a spoken word excerpt of it in the song. The coolest title I thought I had, "Go Into the Woods With Sticks" was changed by my other collaborator Jeff Crandall because we were both reading a book about 15th century mysticism, so it became "The Skryer," which was what they called a paranormal medium back then. Anyway, "Dr. Phibes" never got changed but still has a story. I was watching a cartoon with my kids called "Shaggy and Scooby Doo Get A Clue" and it had a character named Dr. Phibes that made me laugh, so I named this tune after him. When I gave the pieces to Tyson and Jeff to work on, Jeff thought I meant Dr. Phineas Phibes, an old movie villain played by Vincent Price. Jeff came up with an evil vocal part sung in Portugese that loosely translates to "I will kill your family and destroy all humanity". So, umm..don't read too much into my song titles, just enjoy the music!
