about

This song is dedicated to my friend at work who, jokingly, said,"What are you doing, writing a symphony?" when he saw me composing this piece on a post-it note. I later presented this album to him at a show and was sure to let everyone know this song was for him. Dan is a really great guy and it has been an honor to know and work with him. There are a couple misconceptions about composing music. One is that a piece of music needs to be long. Some of the most amazing pieces I've heard are less than 30 seconds long. The second misconception is that composed music needs to look like a traditional classical score (a "score" is all the instrumental or vocal parts notated together on paper). I tell my students to use crayons and a piece of construction paper if they feel like it. You can also write the music in any way that makes sense to you--use letters, symbols, words or graphic notation to get your ideas down. For "Daniel K", all I had was a pencil, a post-it note, and about 30 seconds of time--so that's what I used. Thanks to Dan for the title.
